Many people in North Carolina receive denials after filing for Social Security Disability Insurance, and it can be a disheartening experience. If you are among them, you may be wondering what your options are and whether there is any way to appeal this decision.

When the U.S. Social Security Administration denies your SSDI application, you may ask for a reconsideration. This is the initial step in the appeals process for SSDI claims. Essentially, it gives you a second chance to prove that you qualify for SSDI benefits.

Filing A Reconsideration Request

To request reconsideration, you must act promptly. There is a strict time limit for filing – usually within 60 days of receiving your denial letter. Failing to meet this deadline jeopardizes your chances of having your case reviewed.

Completing The Request For Reconsideration

The next step involves completing the Request for Reconsideration form. This form asks for updated information regarding your medical condition, treatment and any other relevant changes since your initial application. Providing as much information as possible helps strengthen your case.

Submitting Supporting Documentation

Submit any new medical evidence that supports your claim along with your Request for Reconsideration form. This could include medical reports, test results and doctor’s statements that highlight the severity of your condition and its impact on your ability to work.

The SSA reports that, between 2010 and 2019, about 31% of all SSDI applicants had their applications for benefits approved. This includes applicants who had their initial claims approved as well as applicants whose claims were successful after an appeal.
